The City of uMhlathuze full council boasts with a strong 67 Councillors from 3 political parties representing 34 wards. The Council also includes Amakhosi from traditional authorities within the City of uMhlathuze. The full council is the final endorsement of all development taking place within the jurisdiction and the boundaries of the City of uMhlathuze.

Robust debated on matters affecting the City’s residents with high disciplined maintaining the decorum of the council is in the capable and politically experienced and intelligent Speaker of the Council, Cllr Mfundo Wisdom Mthenjana.

Mthenjana was inaugurated to the Speaker’s portfolio in May 2015 as a caretaker Speaker after the departure of the then Speaker who was promoted to other deployment. He was then reaffirmed, when elected again as the Speaker of City of uMhlathuze on the 20th of August 2016 immediately after 2016 Local Government election held on the 3rd of August 2016. This was after he served distinctly as a Ward 22 Councillor (2011-2016) which is at eSikhaleni, where he was born.

His political wisdom, sharpness and ideological clarity left the African National Congress (ANC) with no choice other than deploying him to head the City Council. This easy choice emanated from a vast political experience that Mthenjana has amassed from his early days in life as far as from high school level.

His political maturity reached a higher level when he joined the student politics at Mangosuthu University of Technology with the South African Student Congress Organisation (SASCO).

To date Cllr Mthenjana is the Chairperson of the ANC uMhlathuze Sub-region, consisting of 34 branches. He recently relinquished his position as the DEC Member of the SACP Riot Makhomasini Mkhwanazi. He has also served as a SACP Branch Deputy Secretary from 2009-2012.

His leadership within the ANC and the tripartite alliance also encompasses being the Chairperson of the ANC Youth League’s Abe Mthenjana branch. The politics of the ANC runs through his DNA as also his late father Abe Mthenjana was also a known ANC staunch leader.

Cllr Mthenjana is tasked to lead the City of uMhlathuze Council to achieve greater heights more especially in adopting radical economic transformation programmes aimed at benefiting local business sector, create employment and change people’s lives as per the mandate of the ANC.
