WATER QUALITY UPDATE
The City of uMhlathuze can safely pronounce that tap water is now safe for human consumption.
This follows emergency calls to residents not to drink tap water after contamination by manganese from one of the sources Nsezi Lake in Richards Bay.
Several tests by Mhlathuze Water and some by Mgeni Water found that water sampled from the lake was contaminated by a high level of manganese.
The City and the water authority worked tirelessly to flush out contaminated water from the system and isolated it from the drinkable water.
The contaminated water was saved through by being channelled to industries which do not require clean drinkable water. Other sources of water within the city were activated to service the contaminated lines while tests were conducted.
Water scientists are working with the city officials to find the main source of manganese and to clear it for good.
The city would also like to apologise for inconvenience caused and a panic thereof. Manganese contaminated water does not cause any immediate health hazard unless consumed by already ill person or young ones.
