His Worship the Mayor of the City of uMhlathuze Cllr MG
The City of uMhlathuze, north of KwaZulu-Natal has been blessed with credible leadership in the youthful Hon. Mayor Cllr MG Mhlongo. Mhlongo took the guard of the City in May 5, 2015 on the deployment by the African National Congress (ANC).
Njomane, (his clan name) as affectionately known to his comrades, comes to the City of uMhlathuze captaincy with a mixed bag of leadership and administrative acumen.
Born in the township of KwaDlangezwa under the Khandisa reserve on 19 July 1978, Councillor Mduduzi Gift Mhlongo is the current Mayor of the City of uMhlathuze.
Njomane joined the City of uMhlathuze in the year 2009 as an Administrative Officer and navigated through the ranks until he became a Manager in the Office of the Speaker.
He was later promoted to being a Manager: Public Participation & Councillor Support, where he worked closely with all Councillors and Political Office Bearers as well as heavily involved in resolving public queries and mobilisation of the public to participate in municipal activities.
Little did he know that he would soon be Acting Deputy Municipal Manager: Corporate Services in the City. His stint in that office was short-lived again due to his deployment to the political wing of the City to become Speaker of Council in 2014, a position he occupied for few months as well.
Mhlongo began his activism at a very early stage in his life stemming far back from his High School days as an activist of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) and was the Deputy President of the LRC in 1997 at Old Mill High School in eMpangeni.
He then enrolled at the University of Zululand (Unizulu) for an LLB degree and that is where his political activism flourished. Before he went to university, he was already a youth activist at home in his community.
It was in the University of Zululand that he would be a prominent leader of student struggles and went on to be elected Branch Chairperson of the South African Students Congress (SASCO) Khulekani Mhlongo Branch (Unizulu).
He further served in the Regional Executive Committee of the African National Congress Youth League (formerly North Coast Region) now Musa Dladla Region.
He was then elected as Regional Chairperson of the ANCYL North Coast Region.
Politics runs in his black, green and gold blood as he has served in the structures of the ANC.
He was elected Chairperson of the ANC uMhlathuze Sub-Region and was later co-opted into the Regional Executive Committee of the ANC in Musa Dladla Region.
In November 2015 at the Regional General Council, Mhlongo was elected as the ANC Deputy Chairperson for Musa Dladla Region. Musa Dladla is the second largest region and boasts 99 branches. It is also expected that the number of branches will swell to 103 after the 2016 Local Government Elections, due to re-demarcations.
Councillor Mhlongo was inaugurated in May 5, 2015 as the Mayor of the City of. He became one of the young public office deployees of the African National Congress (ANC).
Njomane is driving the City of uMhlathuze towards realisation of economic emancipation through his administrative capabilities and his sharp leadership skills and experiences. He leads in the front to ensure his council follow suit.
Under his leadership, the City has managed to cement solid relationship with the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ), the National Port Authority (NPA), and commanded the city to fast track basic service delivery to the more than 300 000 population in the city.
Furthermore, under his leadership the City scooped both the prestige Provincial and National Govan Mbeki Awards for the best Municipality Housing Project under Human Settlement. The City received the best IDP Award as well as a Clean Audit Opinion in 2016/2017, a third in a row.
