It is with deep sorrow and shock that the City of uMhlathuze Municipality announces the tragic passing of Councilor JF Myaka, who was also a respected Pastor. Councilor Myaka was fatally shot on the afternoon of Tuesday, the 27th of June 2023, while he was preaching at his church in full view of his congregants at his home in Nseleni township, Richards Bay.
Councilor Myaka was an esteemed member of the City of uMhlathuze Municipality, serving as the PR Councillor. He played an integral role as part of the coalition government led by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). His dedication, commitment, and unwavering service to the community will be deeply missed.
City of uMhlathuze Mayor, Xolani Ngwezi, wishes to convey his heartfelt condolences to the Myaka family, the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), and Councilor Myaka's congregants during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of Councilor Myaka is not only a tragedy for his loved ones but also for the City of uMhlathuze and its residents, who have lost a diligent and principled representative.
The City of uMhlathuze Municipality remains deeply concerned by the circumstances surrounding Councilor Myaka's passing. Eyewitnesses reported that he was shot by an assailant while in the midst of delivering his sermon. Two other gunmen who were present at the scene quickly fled. The municipality is cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies as they investigate this heinous act.
Councilor Myaka will be remembered for his exceptional service to the City of uMhlathuze and his unwavering commitment to upholding ethical standards. Despite facing numerous attempts to lure him with bribes and promises of the mayoral position, Councilor Myaka remained steadfast in his dedication to serving the community and resisted any form of corruption.
The Speaker of uMhlathuze Municipality, Councillor TS Gumede, will lead a delegation of councilors from the City of uMhlathuze to pay a visit to the Myaka family in eNseleni. The meeting will take place at the Nseleni Library at 08:00 this morning. This visit is an opportunity for the municipality to express its condolences and offer support during this difficult time.
