The City of uMhlathuze Municipality is thrilled to share the success of the Airlink Aircraft Upgrade event that took place earlier today at Richards Bay Airport. The event marked the transition from the J41 (25-seater) to the larger E170 (75-seater), reflecting Airlink's commitment to meeting the increasing demand for passenger and cargo services in the region.
Mayor Cllr Xolani Ngwezi, along with Airlink SA CEO Rodger Foster and ACSA's Regional General Manager Mr Nkosinathi Myataza, attended the launch, emphasizing the economic opportunities and enhanced connectivity this milestone brings to the City of uMhlathuze.
Since the reopening of Richards Bay Airport in September 2022, the monthly passenger count has soared from 849 to over 1500, demonstrating the urgent need for expanded capacity. The upgraded E170 aircraft addresses this demand, ensuring more opportunities for travel and enhanced cargo movement.
Mayor Ngwezi spoke passionately about the economic spin-offs resulting from this upgrade, particularly its impact on the tourism sector. Richards Bay, primarily a commercial tourism city, stands to benefit as the increased seating capacity positions it as an attractive destination for both corporate and holiday travelers.
The presence of ACSA's Regional General Manager, Mr Nkosinathi Myataza, underscored the collaborative effort and strategic importance of this development. Mr Myataza applauded the partnership between Airlink and Richards Bay Airport, recognizing the positive impact it will have on the economic development and tourism potential of the region.
The City of uMhlathuze extends its gratitude to Airlink for this significant investment, enhancing our city's connectivity and contributing to its economic growth as well as ACSA for a good partnership that it has with the City of uMhlathuze.
