The City of uMhlathuze continues with helping learners to focus their attention to school work other than being deviated to socio-economic challenges faced by their parents. Today the Mayor of the City Cllr Mduduzi Mhlongo assisted more than 200 learners from 24 schools around the City of uMhlathuze with school jerseys, track-suits, full uniform including shoes and boxes of sanitary towels, at an event held at eMpangeni Civic Centre.
“We are aware of the importance of education in our society and we want to play a meaningful role as well as contribute in the up-bringing of our children. The future of South Africa and the world is in education, so we cannot relax when we see a child going to school without proper uniform, we cannot relax seeing female learners missing a number of days in a year because her parents cannot afford to buy her sanitary towels. We are running a caring government and at all level we need to see to it that the well-being of our education system is taken care of. We are aware of the plight of the parents that they are facing a triple challenge which is poverty, inequality and unemployment. This triple challenge has a huge negative effect on the learners. That is why this government decided to introduce the nutrition programme at schools. Wherever we can assist with the little we have, we shall do so. We also appreciate private companies for coming into party when we request them to extend their hands and assist our needy community who cannot afford on their own,” Mayor Mhlongo said.
The City of uMhlathuze partnered with companies such as Mondi Group, which was represented by Mrs Hlengiwe Mvubu, Imbawula, The Last Dance Music Festival organisers, represented by Sipho Maphalala, Foskor, TTECH, and many other partners through their social responsibility programmes.
The Deputy Mayor Cllr Slondile Mkhize yesterday handed over about 100 boxes of sanitary towels in two schools at Nseleni, Sinaye Primary and Tholokuhle High. Some of the sanitary towels were donated during Mandela Day by an outdoor advertising company, Outsmart.
Mhlongo urged companies to continue helping the needy. “We are noticing the good work and a gesture to change our city for the better coming from companies. We also urge other companies and conglomerates to open doors for us if we call for help, as we have many constitutional mandates but also to look after our societies,” Mhlongo plead.
